What a stunning pair of earrings! Silver Fox Gems Giveaway (ends 6/25)

You never know what sparks creativity in talented people, and I loved learning about Ashely of Silver Fox Gems and her first piece of jewelry as a little girl. I think you’ll be inspired by this talented etsian, and if you are lucky you’ll win a little of that talent for yourself in the form of some gorgeous earrings!

It started with a ring.
I was 6, maybe 7 years old and my mother handed me an old ring of hers. It wasn’t anything big or flashy, but it was my first piece of a “real” jewelry. It was a yellow gold band with 5 small green emeralds with even tinier diamonds spaced between them. I must have spent hours of my life just staring at how perfect those emeralds were. How inconceivably green and opaque. They were the perfect shade of green, not too light as to be lime colored but not so dark as to be forest green. They were a true emerald color.
I was a science-loving nerdy kid when I was young. I spent hours glued to the TV watching volcanoes erupt and dinosaurs stomp around, so it was no surprise that I viewed these stones as proof of the awesome power of the earth to produce something gorgeous.
I must have worn that ring everyday for years, until I got older and realized that it probably didn’t go with every outfit (a moment of revelation that I think everyone has!) But I kept it close.

What is the piece you are most proud of making since you’ve started Silver Fox Gems?

I was pretty excited when I managed to make the Zahra necklace (pink kunzite, tanzanite, and gold pyrite). At the time it marked the longest necklace I had made with the prettiest gems! I think that’s the point where i decided to start making higher end jewelry and it was totally worth it.

Where do you get your inspiration for the latest designs?

My latest designs are totally lifted straight out of nature, and it’s the perfect season to see all the flowers bloom and get the best ideas!

Where do you see your shop in a few years? Any other ventures you plan to expand towards?

I’d love to be able to make a living off doing it and to expand to different and more complex types of jewelry, all still made one at a time time by hand, of course.

What is your favorite relaxation activity after a big creative day?

Making jewelry is the most relaxing part of my day, but every now and then I like to take a break and cuddle with my two beagles, Charlie and Baxter.

You’ve overcome some challenges to start your own business, what advice do you have for a creative person who feels held back from starting new things by life’s challenges?

Take risks. Making jewelry was the easy part, and still is, but being in a business is a totally different beast all together. Still, if you never make that first daunting step, you never know where it will go.
